Watch Weeds Online

By Dan Levine

There are many American comedy-dramas on television today but one that has become particularly popular is Weeds, a Showtime show made by Lionsgate television and created by Jenji Kohan.

The plot of Weeds mainly involves a housewife who has been widowed and thus must find a way to make money. She lives in an affluent California suburb and basically becomes the neighborhood drug dealer selling marijuana in order to earn her income.

The TV series name, Weeds, seems to refer both to the plant that the protagonist sells (marijuana) as well as widow's weeds which is what one would wear when one's husband dies and becomes a widow. Additionally, it may refer to American suburbs which grow quickly like weeds and contain many people who are indistinguishable; just like weeds.

The theme for the series which begins at the opening of each show is "Little Boxes", a song that stresses the sameness of suburban life and is a very nice song to be used for this series that involves that aspect of suburban culture.

Weeds currently has five seasons and began to play in 2005. It was the highest rated series for Showtime in its first year and has been considered a definite success for the channel. On average, the season has attracted 962,000 viewers.

The Season 5 premier brought in 1.2 million viewers with an additional 500,000 viewers for the rerun later that night bringing the total viewership to 1.7 million. Not bad for the Showtime channel.

The show's exterior shots and many other shots are taken in places in California like Calabasa and Santa Clarita Valley.

The main characters involve Nancy Botwin who is the protagonist of the show. She is your basic all-American soccer mom who lives the suburban lifestyle until she loses her husband and must enter the marijuana trade to make a living. Her customer base involves many people like her suburban friends, lawyer, accountant and more but eventually she is led to new challenges when she tries to expand her customer base.

Celia is Nancy's best enemy and friend. She is in a marriage that is particularly unhappy which may explain why she is so attracted to various vices like alcohol and trying to take others down in order to "teach them a lesson". However, her friend/enemy status is interesting in contrast to Nancy.

Season 1 starts off with Nancy's husband dying suddenly while he is out jogging thus leaving Nancy alone and in search of a trade to keep her suburban lifestyle afloat. This leads her to the marijuana trade.

Both of Nancy's children attend public school but for Nancy to live and keep going on in her upper middle class lifestyle, she has to make ends meet and this involves her entrance to the marijuana market when she begins to sell to her friends and neighbors.

At one point, some of Nancy's customers begin to go to the medical marijuana shop because its quality is much higher than the quality of Nancy's marijuana. For this reason, Nancy is forced to make baked goods using her cooking skills to find a new way to sell her inferior quality weed. She does a good job of this and covers up her sales by actually making her own bakery and putting Costco's products on her shelves as her own.

Weeds is a very good television program that has been doing quite well for some time now. If the characters and plot seem interesting to you, it would be worth checking out on the Showtime network. You may also view clips and other videos from the show online if you search around a bit for the "Weeds" television title. - 23806

The Panasonic Viera TX-L32S10 Our Review

By Calvin Diaz

If you're about to obtain your very first HD television set, you may not be prepared to spend a lot of money on your purchase. With the way the economy is lately, that's not remarkable. If you're looking at entry level HD sets, you maybe don't anticipate very high quality from your first acquisition. The Panasonic Viera TX-L32S10 is worth shortlisting. Expect full 1080 dpi resolution from this TV. You'll have a 32 inch monitor that gives you great HD images and is priced way beneath others in the market.

Of people who have reviewed or commented on the Panasonic TX-L32S10, the biggest thing that comes up is the inability to calibrate the backlight and the colour from the main onscreen menu. It's a really simplistic menu, too simple for the more advanced users but not an issue for most of us.

With SD and 720p resolution, there is a 1 to 1 pixel mapping capability, making the clearest resolution possible. With this Panasonic TX-L32S10 1080p resolution, there is not 1 to 1 mapping but the quality is incredible. There is no edge enhancement but that doesn't seem to cause any issues, in fact, those using 60p games through xbox and their PS3's seem to really like this set.

Not being able to map at a 1 to 1 ratio causes an issue if you are trying to use the Panasonic TX-L32S10 as a monitor for your PC. You may have some issues with it if you're running heavy text applications but otherwise, you are not going to have any problems with this high quality HD television. You surely won't find this quality anywhere else for the price.

You may think that you're going to lose somewhere with this low priced set, probably with the sound quality. However, once again, you'll be pleasantly surprised. The sound quality is great, especially when you look at the placement of the speakers - pointing slightly downwards. Panasonic was obviously trying to make front presentation as good as possible on the Panasonic TX-L32S10 but they could have taken a little more consideration when it came to placement. However, this doesn't cause any lack of quality sound.

It's not hard to add surround sound to the Panasonic TX-L32S10 to improve the quality of sound. Most viewers will have no issues with the sound quality at all.

This entry level high definition TV does an incredible job when it comes to giving you crystal clear, sharp images. The price is beyond reasonable and quite a steal when you price other sets in the same category and size. This is a perfect TV for those who are just beginning with high definition sets. The Panasonic TX-L32S10 is value for money. - 23806
