Analyzing Batman

By Andrew Tyalor

Batman is possibly one of the most successful comic book characters ever created. He is also possibly one of the darkest.

As a child Bruce Wayne saw his parents being murdered and the trauma persuaded him to devote his life to tackling crime. To help, he created the batman identity and kept it quite separate from his day today identity.

Even as Bruce Wayne, our superhero emotes brooding and darkness. The films that capture the darker side of his nature are truer to the original character.

The later films we have been treated to are a complete contrast to the initial television series where batman was light and humorous. This would have been to appeal to youngsters but in order to attract film watchers, the character had to be much stronger and more in touch with the original character.

The Batman genre is full of shadows. Gotham City is a place that is full of darkly styled buildings and myriads of poorly lit streets. Several of Batman's enemies have a dark feel about them and The Joker is so ominous that he is scary. This was apparent in the latest movie, 'The Dark Knight' where he was played in such a frightening way by Heath Ledger that there was even discussion if the film was suitable viewing for children.

If Batman were real how would he fit into today's culture? He would be a loner and most probably an outcast. Interacting with others would prove difficult. Opening up about his inner turmoil surely wouldn't be easy .

Therefore we have a depressed, Prozac-popping social outcast with an introverted personality. And what of his crime fighting side? With his personal problems would it not be easy to imagine him having vigilante and anti-social tendencies? He could even, ironically, become a criminal.

So here we have a totally different Batman from the one who is so well known and loved. We have a disturbed person who is drug dependent and unable to communicate. He could quite possibly be a repeat offender with his own ideas of right and wrong. And, to top it all, because of this, he may have been awarded with an ASBO. - 23806

Full HDTV Facts

By James Junior

A popular topic in televisions nowadays is full HDTV (full high definition television). This is due to the full changeover of digital television (DTV) signal on June 12, 2009. With this transition complete, everyone has access to HDTV signal. However, not everyone has HD display because in order to get it, you must have an HDTV display television.

For HDTV, resolution is the key word, defining how detailed an image can be displayed without blurring. Those who opted for the HD converter box are still viewing a picture on an analogue CRT screen .NTSC-analogue TV resolution is defined as 480i. The 'i' means interlaced. This results from the TV camera having 480 horizontal lines of resolution while the CRT tube has only 240 lines available. So every other line of the 480 is simultaneously scanned for 1/60th of a second then the remaining lines are scanned. Hence, the TV signal is "interlaced" giving the appearance of more vertical resolution. With an aspect ratio of 4:3 (width x height), the analogue television resolution can be described as 640 x 480i.

HDTV and full HDTV are different from analogue TV due to the resolution of each. The standard HDTV has a resolution of 720i or 720p while a full HDTV has a resolution of 1080i or 1080p. The "p" instead of the "i" stands for progressive scanning. This means that the vertical scans are done simultaneously. Using a 16:9 aspect ratio, the standard HDTV is has 1520 x 720 pixels and the full HDTV has 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The full HDTC is the product that is most favourable, but on TVS with a smaller screen than 42 inches, the difference in the resolution between the standard and full HDTVs isn't noticeable. Therefore, any TV that has a smaller screen than 42 inches is only available in standard HDTV. So, if you want to have full JDTV, you will need to purchase a TV that is 42 inches or larger.

There are currently three options in screen technology for full HDTV: rear projection HDTV, full HD plasma, and full HD LCD TV. Though rear projection televisions are still available, the demand and popularity of them seems to be decreasing. For that reason, many manufacturers aren't even making them anymore. Therefore, it's advised to choose between the two remaining options. Other things to consider when choosing a new television are response time, the contrast ratio, and color reproduction qualities.

Features of a full HDTV plasma screen include a wide range in color, great brightness, and very large screens. The display screens can be made up to 58 inches. Also, since the display panel is only 2.5 inches thick, the TVs are only around 4 to 6 inches thick. Claims of contrast ratios in plasma televisions are as high as 50K and even 100K, but the highest contrast available is 30K. The response time is a very quick .001 milliseconds and the refresh frequencies are 600 Hz. Reasons to choose a plasma screen over an LCD display would be better color reproduction, a wider viewing angle, and fast response time. Response time can make a difference with fast moving images in such cases as watching sports and action.

However, the power requirements for a plasma TV can be as high as 500 watts. Also, plasma televisions are heavier than LCDs; however, plasma screens can be mounted on the wall.

Full HDTV LCD displays have the same resolution as plasma full HDTV displays, but the LCD displays have a slower response time (2 milliseconds). This could result in ghosting during fast moving images. The refresh frequency of an LCD display screen is 240 Hz, but the contrast ratio has been improved so that it's the same as the plasma screen (30K). Though there are some differences in response time and refresh frequencies, LCD TVs are less expensive than plasmas.

A note of caution, except for resolution, when comparing specifications many reviewers question their accuracy and their meaningfulness to your viewing experience. My advice is judge for your self. In conclusion, barring financial and/or physical restraints or simple preference for smaller TV size, full HDTV is the obvious choice. If striving for a home theatre experience, make sure your full HDTV is compatible with the entire system you are planning. - 23806
