Hollywood Movie Studios

By Leyton Henderson

The United States is amongst the biggest producer of movies in the world, along with India and China. It is a country that relies heavily on the industry and is considered to be the leader of film production.

Hollywood is where the majority of movie productions in the United States are based. Comprising of a huge network of movie studios, stars and personnel, the business is spread all across Los Angeles and the surrounding area.

Hollywood is considered by many to be the movie centre of the entire world and is often portrayed as the glamour and spectacle of the movie industry. It is based primarily in the north-west area in Downtown Los Angeles, and is also where most of the movie stars and celebrities reside.

D.W. Griffith came out to California in 1910 with a film crew, sent by the Biograph Company, to shoot footage in the area. They progressed and soon began filming on a vacant lot in downtown Los Angeles. The film company began exploring the outlying territories, and very quickly found that the region was very friendly and ideal for shooting film. Part of the incentive to film there was the endless hours of sunshine and temperate weather.

Griffith then shot the film In Old California, which is widely considered to be the first ever film to be shot in Hollywood. The movie company decided to stay there for some more time to shoot several of their films, before eventually returning to New York.

There was a sudden influx of movie companies moving to the area in 1913. They were all moving here to take advantage of what the area had to offer. This is usually told be the time that Hollywood was born.

The first ever movie studio in Hollywood was the Nestor Studios that were founded in 1911. The movie ?The Squaw Man? was produced around this time also. More movie studios moved to the area and in no time, Los Angeles and particularly Hollywood grew at a dramatic page. Eventually this area became very strongly associated with the movies and epitomes the movie industry as a whole.

It was during the First World War however that Hollywood really came into it?s own and was seen as the movie capital of the world. By the 50?s, much of the country?s movie industry had moved to Hollywood, and the music industry was beginning to follow suite.

The famous Hollywood sign originally read Hollywoodland, was constructed in 1923, originally intended as an advertisement for a new housing development in the area. It was left to rot away, until in 1949 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce repaired the sign, removing the last four letters. The sign, now located at Mount Lee, is a now registered trademark.

Everyone sees Hollywood as the film capital of the world, and all eyes turn to the town for it?s stars and showbiz, especially for special occasions like the Oscars. - 23806
