By Montaigne Whitson

Ironweed: William Kennedy adjusted his Pulitzer Treasure-triumphing novel in reference to road individuals, set in Albany, N.Y., 1938. Nicholson plays a guy trying to come to terms with the life he turned his back on years ago. Streep is his longtime friend who, like him, can't stay off the bottle for long. (144 minutes, 1987)

Rebel: Tiresome, justifiably vague time tablet characterizing Stallone, pre-stardom, as a disassociated political extremist (a fascinating balance to Rambo). Cast includes Antony Page, Sylvester E. Stallone, Rebecca Dirties, and Henry G. Sanders. (112 minutes, 1974)

Down to You: Prinze and Stiles futilely try to buddy us up by talking straight away into the camcorder, clarifying how their once idyllic college romance went bust (albeit not as bust as the film). In someway, this film manages to find room for subplots in reference to a Television show and a friend who has a try as an adult-film entrepreneur with a sort of bohemian knowledgeable porn actress. Cast includes Freddie Prinze, Jr., Julia Stiles, Shawn Hatosy, Selma Blair, Zak Orth, Ashton Kutcher, Rosario Dawson, Henry Winkler, and Lucie Amaz. (91 minutes, 2000)

Nutcracker the Motion Picture: Much of this rendition of The Nutcracker, acted by the Pacific Notthwest Ballet, is like a music video with rapid cutting and close-ups of legs, faces, and elbows. This is extremely irritating. However the Tchaikovsky music is, obviously, amazing, as are Maurice Sendak's sets and costumes. Cast includes Hugh Bigney, Vanessa Acute" Patricia Barker, Plod Walthall, Russell Burnett, and the voice of Julie Harris. (89 minutes, 1986)

His Name Is Elliott

By James Gilbert Pynn

PETES DRAGON, originally conceived as a live-action film, took nearly 20 years to get made. The original version would only allow the audience to glimpse the dragon once, but under the guidance of Don Bluth and Ken Anderson, Elliott not only came to life, but has since become one of the best loved characters in animated history. It was dusted off after Walt Disneys death and re-imagined as a live-action film with animated elements, namely, the eponymous dragon, named Elliott.

The process of drawing an animated dragon into a live-action film was a formidable task. Bluth and Anderson decided rather than xeroxing the drawings of Elliott onto the live-action cells, many of the cells had to be painstakingly hand-inked. To ensure that the final artwork matched the live action, Bluth insisted Elliott's stomach and outline were likewise hand-inked in key scenes, frame by frame.

The viewer is immediately pulled into the story, watching the Gogan family, headed by the talented Shelly Winters, break into a song and dance about the torture they plan to inflict on poor Pete. But parents fear not, you never forget you are watching a Disney movie. Though the film starts with Pete trying to escape his abusive adopted family, it soon takes on a more fantastic turn.

As the story unfolds, the audience is treated to laughter, love, compassion, and the notion that happy endings are simply miracles in the waiting. The invisible dragon, Elliott, helps Pete makes his way out of the swamps and to the relative safety of the fishing village of Passamaquoddy. Though Elliott spends most of the film invisible, he manages to leave a wake of destruction in his wake. The lighthouse keeper, Nora, and her father Lampie take Pete in, showing him love and affection.

PETES DRAGON features the talents of a cavalcade of stars, including Helen Reddy, Jim Dale, Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, and Jim Backus. When combined with the magic of Disney animation, PETES DRAGON becomes a film for all ages and families. It just goes to show: you never know. - 23806
