What everybody needs to understand is that anime is no different from a movie or shows on television. They are essentially just an art media to convey stories, thoughts and ideas. They have featured both simple stories for children as well as more adult concerns like politics, life and world issues.

Next, people who love anime are no different from those who enjoy getting their thrills from action movies. The latter exhibit the same passion when discussing their favorite movies or action sequences. However, they are never considered to be 'nerdy' in behavior.

Not everything that is handled in anime series or films are for children. There are many serious series too that explore subject matter more often associated with adults, such as politics, love and even ironic satire. They can be viewed as animated forms of books or documentaries in such genres.
