5 Top Animes That Are A Must Watch

By Anna Tsuchiya

Cartoon series are also known as anime serials or movies. In Japan, they are a popular art medium that has garnered a huge fanbase not only within the country, but on a global scale too. While some critics deride them as just cartoons for children, even adults can enjoy them without feeling guilty about it.

Anime fans will defend the genre as something that has something to offer for adults as well, despite critics' insistence that those who watch them have yet to grow up beyond their adolescent years. Interestingly, there are hundreds of anime series that have plots that also look into family and individual relationships, social concerns and more, not something that most children would like to spend time on.

However, new series are produced rapidly and fans often have too many choices on their plates. Opinions will always be divided on which anime shows are the essentials ones, but here are five different titles that should be seen and not just heard.

1. Naruto - There are few anime fans who have never heard of Naruto. This anime series explores the adventures of a young man known as Naruto, who is a ninja. The plot is full of his trials and tribulations in becoming the best ninja in his hometown and features an assortment of interesting characters and stories.

2. Fist of the North Star - This anime touches on more serious plots and angles that originated from a world destroyed by humans' involvement in nuclear wars. Some have complained about the level of violence featured, but it is hard to separate that from a future that is depicted to be dire and cold.

3. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Known as a mecha anime which uses futuristic mechanical robots as integral to the storylines, Gurren Lagann follows the life of Simon, a youngster who braves his natural fear of failure and an inferiority complex to lead a band of humans against the Beastmen, who are intent on dominating and destroying them. Aside from the non-stop action and skilfull animation, the series also touches on authentic human feelings and relationships.

4. Toradora - Based on a manga, this romantic comedy is targeted at teenagers who are exploring growing pains in relationships and self realization. Toradora features the dysfunctional but touching friendship between a young man, Ryuji Takasu, and his female neighbour and classmate, Taiga Aisaka. They have affections for each other's best friends, but their relationship evolves in very romantic ways.

5. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - This anime series which first aired in 2006 in Japan is now a classic which has spawned a passionate fanbase in different related niches. It is an offbeat story about Haruhi Suzumiya, who has the incredible talent to manipulate reality. This has apparently struck a chord with many fans that often create their own mini-universes to indulge in their own fantasies. - 23806
