Metallica Rocks Again

By Patrick Daniels

Metallica new releases generally are a good time. Throughout their twenty five years most have been a success, only a couple weren't notable. The fanbase has enjoyed most of their releases, an exception would be the previous release, St. Anger. They seem to have been trying out some new sounds, which was okay except the fans weren't thrilled. Fans can't dictate every note a band plays, there has to be some experimenting along the way.

Luckily, that album paved the way for the newest album, Death Magnetic. With this album, the band has returned to its heavy roots from which they came, they have proven that they still can write good songs. Are they at the top of the heavy metal scene? No, but they are still an important influence and with this album they prove that they can still hang with most other bands.

The heavy metal scene has changed since the late eighties and early nineties and the band was more of a hard rock band through the nineties. I would not put them in the same category as new metal and even the heavy metal of the newest bands. I would say that there are some good songs on this album that could fit in with any of their back catalog. There are four or five songs that would have fit on any of the past albums and are as good as anything else out there.

Metallica will never put out anything as good as the first four albums, but that can be said of any great band. All bands experience this phenomenon. The Rolling Stones had all of their hits prior to the eighties. That doesnt mean that everything in the last thirty years was bad, it just wasn't as good. It isnt classic.

There are only a couple of bands that can keep putting out hit after hit until the band breaks up, but most bands don't stick together into their forties and fifties and still stay relevant. You have to admire a band that can still be relevant and popular after so long. Metallica is in a class that very few bands other than the Stones, Aerosmith and a select few others have reached. - 23806
