Ten Favorable Suggestions For An Awe-Inspiring Film To Watch Today

By Letitia Keller

Wonderful film evaluations start here. Barnyard - Energized craziness set on a farm where, after sundown, the animals turn the barn into a boisterous nightclub. James is Otis, a young cow who is very mature, much to the disappointment of his dad, Ben Elliott, who keeps watch for preying coyotes when the others party. Dom Irrera stands out as Duke the Dog. Cast includes Courtney Cox, Sam Elliott, Danny Glover, Wanda Sykes, Andie MacDowell, David Koechner, and Laraine Newman. (90 minutes, 2006)

Life on a Strand - Musical, delightfully filmed tale of a blind boy who's informed by his teacher that his eyesight can be repaired if he commits his life to music; he gets to be a saintly old gentleman still without eyesight who travels from village to village with his youthful disciple harmonizing melodies, which he finds emotionally nurturing. Considerate film full with poetic energy, and a soundtrack of astonishing melodies. Cast includes Liu Zhong Yuan, Huang Lei, Xu Qing, Ma Ling, and Zhang Zhengguan. (110 minutes, 1991)

Richard's Things - Widow Ullmann is seduced by her late husband's lady friend. Screenplay by Frederic Raphael based on his novel. Cast includes Liv Ullmann, Amanda Redman, Tim Smith, Elizabeth Spriggs, and David Markha. (104 minutes, 1980)

Sugar Town - Pleasurable mosaic of LA life characterizing a handful of characters whose lives fit together - a musician wannabe who will do anything to get ahead, an uptight lone woman who allures the unsuitable men like a magnet, and a band made up of cleaned-up '80s rock megastars, to name a few. Made on a shoestring, although astute and well recognized; excellent cast comprises a variety of real life musicians. Cast includes Ally Sheedy, Rosanna Arquette, John Taylor, Jade Gordon, Michael Des Barres, Lucinda Jenney, and Martin Kemp. (92 minutes, 1999)

Thunderheart - There have been a number of killings on the Sioux Indian Reservation. The FBI goes in to deal with the situation. One agent, Ray Levoi, has Sioux blood. As he investigates the case he soon finds out there is much more going on than some accidental murders.

Ivan the Terrible - Continuance of the story of King Ivan IV, in which he takes on the boyars in a fight for power. Impressive film is just a hint underneath its predecessor, Forbidden by Stalin due to arguable illustration of Ivan's secret patrol, and not released till 1958. Cast includes Nikolai Cherkassov; Serafima Birman, Mikhail Nazvanov, Pavel Kadochnikov, and Andrei Abrikosov. (88 minutes, 1946)

Solar Crisis - Futuristic sci-fi thriller with Matheson leading a save the Earth mission to the sun to stop a solar flash from annihilating the world. Fine visual effects and exciting tale in space harmed by world pranks of poor boy Boyle who outrageously wants to challenge the mission. Cast includes Tim Matheson, Charlton Heston, Peter Boyle, and Annabel Schofield. (112 minutes, 1990)

Black like Me - Vigorous drama based on real history of a reporter who took drugs that allowed him to pass for black so he might live through racial prejudice first hand. Some features of presentation are outdated, although topics are still important. Cast includes James Whitmore, Roscoe Lee Browne, Lenka Petersen, Sorrell Booke, Will Geer, Al Freeman, and Raymond Jacques. (107 minutes, 1964)

Rich and Strange - Kendall and Barry, an miserably married couple, are given cash and expedition around the world; he has an event with a "princess," when she gets to be romantically attached to an explorer. Cast includes Henry Kendall, Joan Barry, Betty Amann, Percy Marmont, and Elsie Randolph. (83 minutes, 1932)

10,000 B.C. - Warlords have attacked a small mountain tribe in prehistoric times. They have captured the exquisite Evolet. D'Leh, who loves Evolet, leads a small party of men set to go the ends of the Earth to save Evolet. - 23806
