Best Christmas 2009 Movie: Avatar

By Tom Wilson

Avatar is the most unique movie out there, it is the most amazing piece of work made by director James Cameron. Avatar is most likely the best of all the movies created by James Cameron such as Titanic and the Terminator Series. Everyone who has watched the movie in 3-D absolutely loves the stunning detail and realistic features of a movie in which more than half of the characters are created from imagination. Amazing visual effects and magnificent 3-D work makes the audience feel like they are in the movie themselves. The team who worked on this movie has indeed set a new bar in the industry.

The year is 2154 and the main character of Avatar is Jake who is a handicapped marine who lost his legs on a military operation on Earth. Pandora is a moon of a planet several light years away from Earth and the movie begins with Jake and his fellow marines arriving at Pandora after a 5 year journey. Jake is on this particular mission after signing up for it after his brother's death. His brother, Tom was a scientist working on a high-level operation and was only replaced by Jake because they both shared the same DNA structure.

The natives of Pandora are the navis, who are 10 feet tall creatures with sparkly blue skin, tails and many human-like features. The humans created human-navi hybrids which were used to communicate with the navis, known as the Avatar project, which can be controlled by humans. Jake is assigned his brother's Avatar and loves the motion of walking the first time he controls his Avatar since he misses the feeling of being able to walk.

Colonel Miles Quartich, Jake's military commander, wants Jake to learn how the navis live and find out more about them as a covert mission operative so he can work on his strategic plans for an attack to capture the mineral deposits of unobtanium (which is a rare and expensive source of energy on Earth) which lies where the navis live. Dr. Grace Augustine however, who is the leading scientist on the Avatar Program has a different set of goals, which is to find out new things and scientific advances while working on a dipomatic solution to get the navis to move from their location to avoid a bloodshed.

A young female by the name Neytiri finds Jake after he gets attacked by a Thanator and separated from his friends while on a mission. She takes him to the navi tribe where the leaders are angry at first but end up accepting Jake and assign Neytiri to teach him the ways of the navi. Jake ends up following in love with Neytiri, but after a whole bunch of adventures where the director takes us through breath-taking visual and sound effects as Jake learns the ways of the navi.

This is where the real problem begins as the humans start advancing on the navis and attack them, and Jake battles with his emotions in which he ultimately sides with the navis and leads them in a battle against the humans to save the beauty and the ways of the navi which he has learned through his training process and which he holds more valuable than the humans' objectives. Again, the director uses fantastic 3-D effects and wows the audience and gives his audiences the most realistic experience possible . - 23806
