PSP UMD Movies: Deeper Concerns Are At Play
Ever since the PlayStation Portable (PSP) was launched, individuals have been interested in much more than the games that could be played on it. There was also a lot of demand for the PSP UMD movies that it could play. Just consider that there are more of these movies available than there are games and other PSP stuff. This has also led to the creation of software involving these movies such as PSP Movie Creator and other converter programs.
But before long, folks mostly stopped purchasing the PSP UMD movies. This drop in sales prompted the producers of these disks to shrink their stock or even stop making them, as well as selling them at lower prices. The problem, though, wasn't that individuals weren't watching the movies, it is just that they were finding another supply of them. It is just like the situation the CD and DVD industries are facing, where individuals download music and movies instead of buying a physical product. It seems silly to spend money on something you can get at no cost.
Unfortunately for the makers of PSP UMD movies, this is a situation they probably didn't foresee. The same thing occurred in the music industry when individuals started downloading songs, for which there were lots of free sources. There are now so many sites where you can get pirated copies of PSP UMD movies that it has impacted the manufacture of the physical product.
Manufacturers tried to counter the situation by selling special editions and dropping their prices. Some companies resorted to creating websites where movies can be viewed by streaming for a small price. But even at a reduced price, folks still preferred to download their movies free of charge.
There is a huge amount of sites out there that convert movies into PSP formats that are easily downloadable to your console. In addition to this internet access to free movies, you can also purchase programs that will convert your files to UMD format. Even though this is technically illegal, it's still a popular practice. And of course these files are shared freely online. There are so many choices to purchasing a movie that it almost seems crazy to do so.
So how do you solve the problem? Perhaps there needs to be an organization that monitors these illegal downloads. No doubt the movie manufacturers would like to be involved in something like this. Additionally, it's important that the laws against piracy are implemented more forcefully with wider coverage. However it's much less difficult to talk about this than to do anything about it.
