Top Ten Ways To Sabotage Your Own Audition

By Cris Evigan

When you get an audition for a commercial you should be thrilled. Getting the audition alone is like winning the lottery and a spot hundreds and thousands of other actors would like to be in. Therefore you want to make the most out of your opportunity and convince the casting director you're the right one for the role or at the very least make them want to call you in again for another audition.

1. Forget your headshot and resume Your headshot is your calling card. This is a job and a headshot is like a business card. It identifies you and gives the casting director all your information so you they can contact your representation to call you back.

2. Physical contact with casting director Do not touch the casting director under any circumstance unless they engage you in physical contact. They see hundreds of actors a day and don't want to be touched and get your germs. It's just a matter of sanitation.

3. Chewing bubblegum Fresh breath is nice and all but you need to spit out that gum before you enter the audition room. Chewing gum on camera looks miserable and will ruin your audition. The only exception is if the casting director or script specifically asks you to chew gum.

4. Talk too much If you have a question ask it. Say hello and how's your day if you would like. But don't let the chatter go on too long. It just eats up their time. Remember they're looking for someone their client will enjoying working with on set, a chatterbox get annoying and is distracting.

5. Crashing If you weren't called in the first time there's likely a reason why so don't disrespect the casting director and decide to show up unexpectedly like no one will notice because they will and you may be blacklisted for it.

6. Tardiness It's your job to audition, don't show up late. They track this and will remember if you're extremely late or routinely late to sessions.

7. Having excuses for everything Don't create an excuse for everything from being late to not knowing about the wardrobe or getting the sides in time. Honestly they don't care. It doesn't matter so just deal with it and do your best.

8. Talk about acting, singing or dancing If asked a general personality question don't talk about acting, singing or dancing. Everyone in the entertainment world can act, sing and dance. It's nothing new. Show them a different part of your personality. Talk about things you believe in, your volunteer work or your favorite things to do with your free time. Be a real person.

9. Be rude No matter what, don't be rude to anyone, including other actors. A casting assistant or someone else could be watching and no one wants to hire a rude actor.

10. Lie You'll only get caught. When they ask you if you can ice skate and blow bubbles if you can't then just admit it but say something to the effect that you're a fast learner or happen to do other things. If you lie and they suddenly ask you to do those things you said and you can't you'll look like a fool. - 23806
