New Star Trek Film Re-Boots Star Trek's Popularity

By Bryan Enderson

After learning that parent studio Paramount had given the go-ahead for a new Star Trek movie in 2006 many Hollywood experts were baffled. It had only been a few years before that Star Trek: Nemesis had opened and quickly faded with terrible reviews and even worse ticket sales. Now, the studio was going to make another Star Trek movie?

With the benefit of hindsight it appears that the movie studio may have had a better idea of what was afoot than the nay-sayers. Star Trek has been a spectacular success. The film has thus far grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, including over $250 million in the United States alone.

Clearly, this new and improved Star Trek has found a place in the heart of younger movie goers. What is more surprising is that critics have embraced it as well. Quite shockingly, the film has earned some of the strongest reviews of the year.

Star Trek is not the first film in the Star Trek franchise to garner strong reviews. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which debuted over 27 years ago, was probably the best reviewed film of the series before 2009's Star Trek. Still, even it did not enjoy as strong of notices as the most recent movie.

With the support of critics and an effective marketing campaign aimed at a younger demographic that never spent much time at Star Trek movies in the past, the overall success of Star Trek has been staggering. Few believe that Paramount realized that they had this big of a hit on their hands, and many believe that they took a terrible risk when spending $150 million to produce a movie for a franchise that had never had a hit movie make more than $150 million. Still, the gamble paid off.

A new generation of Star Trek fans has been created with a new allegiance to new actors playing familiar roles. As a result, more toys and promotional tie-ins were made for this film than for any in years past. And, to the surprise of nobody, Paramount has announced a sequel.

The latest Star Trek, which will be number twelve in the series, is already one of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2011. Rumors have spread on the internet about the storyline of the new movie. Most interesting, it has been leaked that Khan may return for the first time since the early 1980s.

Because of the spectacular box office of 2009's Star Trek, it is likely that Paramount will green light many more Star Trek films. For fans of the franchise, this great news as fans everywhere hope that Star Trek continues to live long and prosper. - 23806
