The Beatles: Seven Piano Based Classic Songs

By Jason R. Bohener

Maybe it's because Paul McCartney loved Little Richard that he played piano in some of The Beatles tunes but unlike Little Richard, The Beatles usually used piano for ballads (although there is "Lady Madonna" which is certainly not a ballad.) This article is a look at seven Beatles songs which feature a piano as the main rhythmic & harmonic instrument.

"Hey Jude" is definitely a classic. It was a huge hit single all around the world in 1968 and now in 2009 it remains one of The Beatles best known and loved songs. It's length (over 7 minutes) was groundbreaking at the time and for many years it was the longest #1 single of all time in both the UK & US.

"Let It Be" is currently the most played Beatles song according to the Last.FM music site. Obviously this is a song that has a timeless quality to it. The piano part that McCartney plays for this song is quite simple and I think that's part of it's charm. Another great element of this beautiful song is the gorgeous guitar solo by George Harrison.

"The Long & Winding Road" is a song that divides listeners more than the almost universally loved "Hey Jude" & "Let It Be." Many people find this one a bit too "schmaltzy" but I think that's primarily due to the overblown production put on the original release by Phil Spector (who did so without Paul McCartney's approval.) Check out the stripped down version on the 2003 Let It Be... Naked album to hear what Paul's original version for the song was.

"For No One" is a very beautiful ballad from Revolver. Along with the piano, it also features a french horn and a harpsichord. The Beatles were always looking for new sounds to try on their recordings. This song is less well known than it should be. Those of you who only have The Beatles "greatest hits" compilations are really missing out on some of their greatest work. Buy the albums!

"The Fool on the Hill" is such a great song. I think part of what makes it so great is that it's hard to pinpoint exactly what kind of song it is. Plus there's the flutes. You can't go wrong with flutes like that.

"Lady Madonna" was another hit song based on the piano (it hit #1 in the UK in the US) for The Beatles. I would say it's amazing how many of The Beatles piano based songs became hits but really that's just par for the course for them. And, oh yeah, the melody for this song became a hit again in the 1990s for the band Sublime ("What I Got.")

"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" is a great example of how much The Beatles relied on McCartney's bass guitar to define their sound. Yes the song makes use of a piano (which is why it's on this list) but really it's the bass guitar that pushes the song forward and gives it much of it's personality. - 23806
