HBO Very Happy with True Blood
They say that every cloud has a silver lining but where pay cable network Home Box Office (HBO) is concerned theirs is pure gold! Why? Well, because of their showing in June of the serial True Blood Season 2, which have been adapted by Director Allan Ball (of Six Feet Under fame) from the books of Charlaine Harris. The stats show that Season 2 episode 1 pulled in more viewers (3.7 million) for any of HBOs serials since the finale of The Sopranos screened 2 years ago.
The DVD of the Season 1 show sold almost 725,000 copies within the first two weeks of its release, which translated to $26 million according to TV by the numbers. Furthermore, it has become one of the most popular iTunes downloads.
Further to this though, HBO are in the enviable position of producing and owning the series and as such all profits will line their pockets along with Time Warner " HBO being a subsidiary company.
Typically an episode of a drama screened on the HBO network will cost upwards of an expensive $2 million. However, True Blood is costing more in the region of between $3 - $4 million for each episode! With continued success in the same format as the first showing of Season 2 though, it will not be long before the network is showing a profit.
With only around 1.4 million viewers at the beginning of Season 1 it was looking at one time like the plug was going to be pulled on the hit show. Fortunately, this was not the case.
As time goes on it looks like its going to join the same league as The Sopranos, Sex and the City and Six Feet Under, all of which were screened by HBO.
The total viewing figures for the night of 14th June stack up to have been over 5 million " 3.7 million for the first screening and a further 1.4 million for the second which was shown later the same night. I suspect many of those viewers would have been die-hard Sookie Stackhouse and Charlaine Harris fans. Charlaine Harris is the author of the series of books that True Blood has been adapted from.
This may have a very positive knock-on effect for the new comedy on HBO which goes by the name of Hung and tells the story of a teacher who makes the decision to become a male gigolo, which premieres on the 28th June.
In the US, Showtime recently took over as the main cable network provider in part due to various successes including Weeds, Californication and Nurse Jackie. However, with the likes of True Blood, HBO has managed to regain top dog.
With a total of between $1.3 to $1.4 billion dollars yearly profits generated mainly from its 38 million subscribers in the US and abroad, things are looking very rosy for HBO and for Sookie Stackhouse and True Blood. - 23806
